UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY - MBA ESSAY ANALYSIS

COLLEGE APPLICATION ESSAY: WHAT TO WRITE AND HOW TO WRITE IT

What makes you feel alive when you are doing it, and why? (300 words maximum)

You may be passionate and feel alive doing many things, but keep your answer here generally within the business school realm. You may want to address particular roles, extracurricular activities or leadership involvement that has been a theme throughout your career, school involvement, or your general decisions in life. Also, try to keep the information new here.

The definition of successful leadership has evolved over the last decade and will continue to change. What do you need to develop to become a successful leader?  (300 words max)

This essay is about self-reflection and your ability to integrate your performance with external trends (and feedback) in leadership to improve your skills accordingly. To effectively write this essay, introduce your leadership skills with specific examples. Show which areas you may need improvement in and how Berkeley’s  MBA will get you to your desired position. Use precise details relevant to their MBA to show your interest and knowledge of the program’s outstanding qualities and how they will improve you and your leadership capabilities.

Please elaborate on any of your above responses. Alternatively, you may use this opportunity to expand on other hardships or unusual life circumstances that may help us understand the context of your opportunities, achievements, and impact. (300 words maximum)

Everyone faces adversity in life, and your background and resilience to adversity affect you as a leader. In this essay, show Berkeley where you have come from and how you have become who you are through all the challenges life throws at someone. This essay is optional, so if you chose to address this essay, make it more neutral and personal in nature without blaming anyone for your upbringing.  Instead, show how an unusual life circumstance was challenging for you, but you could still succeed into the successful person you are today.

This section should only be used to convey relevant information not addressed elsewhere in your application. This may include explanation of employment gaps, academic aberrations, supplemental coursework, etc. You are encouraged to use bullet points where appropriate.

This essay is not mandatory and should only be filled out if there are actual, real extenuating circumstance(s) which have left a gap or mar on your application.  Explain these instances without making excuses. Just explain the facts behind them and, if the event was under your control, how you could have handled the situation better.
