If you just finished your bachelor degree and you are interested in the management field, then two options are available to you : MIM or MBA. These two programs are dealing with various aspects of management work and could be interesting.
Overview of MBA and MIM
Even if these two programs seem similar from an outside perspective, if you really look into the content of these masters you will notice differences. In the first place, it seems important to give a general definition of these two masters.
- MBA
MBA stands for Master of Business Administration. This program will provide students practical and theoretical training for investment or business management. Thanks to this master, students will gain general knowledge and a better understanding of business management functions. Generally, this type of study will focus on marketing, accounting, finance or relationship management. To be able to enroll in Master of Business Administration program, each student will need to take the Graduate Management Admission Test. MIM refers to the world ”Master in Management” and is an interesting choice for students that do not have an extensive experience of work history in business. You just need a bachelor degree to be eligible for this program. Most of the time, this master will last 12 to 15 months divided in four terms. The first term contains five subjects that will be the same for each student. The second will have six specialization courses in management that will depend on the choice of the student. The third term provides the possibility to pursue an internship program during three months of a relevant field that the student will decide on beforehand. The fourth one is entirely dedicated to writing dissertations and research.
The differences between MIM and MBA
There are multiple differences that one can find between the Master in Management and the Master of Business Administration.
First, MBA focus more on practical orientation while MIM present a more theoretical focus. Because of that, it is recommended to have previous work experience before applying for the MBA in order to make sure to be selected for this program. This is not the case with the MIM where anyone with a bachelor degree in management can be enrolled. This rule makes the average age of the applicants for MBA around 27 years old while MIM receive students as young as 23 years old.
Second, the MBA as a recognition all over the world, while MIM is mainly known in Europe. Because of this high recognition, the tuition fee for the MBA will be way more expensive than the tuition fee for the MIM. On the same note, the salary you will received after the MBA will be significantly higher (the average being $10,000) than with the MIM (the average being $5,000).
Third, the content of the courses for these two programs are different. MIM program will be more specialized on a particular area of management unlike in the MBA program which displays diverse courses from technology and entrepreneurship to marketing and finance. As such, MIM will be more suitable for fresh graduates that are fixed on management while MBA will be better for working professionals that want to get more insight of the business world.
