Meet Ludovic, our student of the month for January 2010, who got accepted to the Chicago Booth of Business for an MBA program. He has a very technical background. Before applying for an MBA, he worked in the telecom and technology sector for many years. He attended École Supérieure d'Ingénieurs en Informatique et Génie des Télécommunications for a master's in science in telecom engineering, telecommunication, computer sciences, and embedded technologies. His skills lie in telecommunication, go-to-market strategy, SaaS, business strategy, wireless, M2M, cloud computing, B2B, new business development, etc. He has also volunteered as secretary-general at Alternative Libérale as he was a candidate for the parliamentary election of 2007 (Candidate for European election of 2009, Paris region). He started his career working as a business development engineer at Nokia, then worked as a consultant and sales marketing manager. He decided to switch his career from technical to a more key responsibility role in finance and marketing. He wanted to be an entrepreneur in the long term, so he contacted Dr Hubert and the MBA Center. We helped him throughout his preparation, and Dr Hubert guided him with the best strategies and tricks for the GMAT. He successfully made it to the Chicago Booth School of Business for an MBA program in the US. We have put his interview below so that you can have a look and applicants can learn from it!

Can you tell us more about yourself?

My name is Ludovic and I am currently working as a Product Sales Development Manager for Ericsson. Prior to this, I was the Director and Owner of Arkonis Consulting based in Singapore. I got my MSc in Telecom Engineering, Telecommunication, Computer Science and Embedded Technologies from the ESIGETEL, France.

 What prompted you to apply for an MBA?

I had a very technical education and up to 2010, all my jobs were in the telecom and technology sector. However, I wanted a switch in my career to work in the area of financing and marketing, business development, entrepreneurship, and leadership. To this end, I decided to do an MBA to further my career prospects. Apart from this, my wife is of Chinese descent from Singapore and I wanted to move there for work and other purposes. I realized that I would need to obtain credit to work in Singapore and an MBA from the Hong Kong campus of the University of Chicago would act as key to obtaining the network and a job there.

What did you find the most difficult in the application process?

The most difficult part of the application process was finding the time to prepare for the GMAT, visit schools and also write the applications while being actively working for my company at that time. Fortunately, I received immense support from Dr. Hubert Silly and the MBA Center which had a lot of value for me. With their help, I was able to get a 700 in the GMAT in three months' time. They provided all the support while I was drafting my application and I was also put in touch with a lot of MBA Programs while studying at the MBA Center.

What is life like at the Chicago Hong Kong campus?

Hong Kong is a very competitive economic environment and choosing to do it to the Booth EMBA at the Hong Kong campus was a very rewarding experience. Even though the classes were spaced out over a long period, I got the chance to see the fast-paced economic growth that Hong Kong exhibits first hand. The diverse nature of the students, all highly placed in their own jobs and companies, was another key that helped make the EMBA a truly remarkable experience.

 

 

Before you start applying for MBA Programs, do full-blown research on the program you want to study. For example, when I first went to the MBA Center, I had decided to do a full-time MBA Program. However, I understood that given my age and my career and all the personal constraints, it would be impossible for me to take the time for it. After a fruitful talk with Dr. Hubert Silly and MBA Center I came up with the idea of taking up the Executive MBA from Chicago Booth which would combine all my that I was looking for: my interest in a US degree, ability to work and study at the same time and a chance to develop my network in Asia.
