A full-time MBA asks you to step away from work entirely for one to two years. That trade-off only makes sense for certain goals, so it helps to be clear on what a full-time programme actually gives you that a part-time or executive format does not.
A clean break for a career change
If you want to move into a different industry or function, a full-time programme gives you the room to do it properly: a summer internship to test the new field, a cohort of classmates already working in it, and recruiters who come to campus specifically to hire career switchers. Trying to make the same change while still working full time is much harder, since you have no internship, no dedicated placement support and far less time to network.
The shortest path back to work
Most full-time MBAs run one to two years, which is faster than working through an equivalent part-time or executive programme alongside a job. You study intensively for a fixed period rather than stretching the same material over three or four years of evenings and weekends.
Learning you cannot get from a textbook
Case studies, group projects and the internship itself all put you in situations closer to the job you are aiming for than classroom theory alone. The internship in particular matters for career switchers: it is often the first real evidence on your CV that you can do the new job, not just that you have studied it.
The real trade-off
None of this is free. You give up a salary for the length of the programme, you need savings or financing to cover it, and you need a genuine reason to leave your current job rather than simply adding a credential to it. A full-time MBA tends to make the most sense when you are changing industry, function or geography, and less sense if you are already on the track you want to stay on, where a part-time or executive MBA may get you there with less disruption.
